Each new era of history has been heralded in by a revolutionary innovation that sparked a significant change in mankind and opened up new, previously unimaginable possibilities for one’s own financial and societal advancement.
In recent history, just a few of these innovations have been:
- railways, which revolutionised trade routes and lent wings to new businesses;
- the automotive industry, which fundamentally changed the way we move from place to place;
- the increasing production of crude oil, which ultimately become the primary source of energy;
- information technology, which rang in a rapidly changing information and communication age.
All of these epochs engendered great names and great fortunes; indeed, entire dynasties that ranked amongst the most influential families in the world. But not all families and entrepreneurs manage to preserve, multiply and pass on to future generations the wealth that their forebears accumulated.
